Zola Mae Sugg Clayton, age 82 of Williamston, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 29, 2023 from a long battle with Dermatomyositis.
She grew up in Alcolu, South Carolina and graduated in 1959 from Tuomey Hospital School of Nursing in Sumter, South Carolina. Zola loved to help others and was a Registered Nurse, she was one of the first certified diabetes educators in the state of North Carolina, she worked at East Carolina Medical School the last 11 years of her career. In addition, she worked in various nursing positions for the past 50+ years. She loved the beach, shag dancing, planting flowers everywhere ...her yard, friends yards: there were always pretty reminders she had been there. She adored her family and loved every minute she could spend with them. She would spread love, smiles and joy everywhere she went.
The youngest of six, she is preceded in death by father, G.C. Sugg; and mother, Zola Mae Sugg of Alcolu, South Carolina; brothers, George C. Sugg, Turner Sugg, and William Sugg; and sisters, Katherine Dickson, and Mary Powell.
Zola is survived by her daughter, Christie Sox and Mike Legate, her first husband, Robert Harrelson; second husband, Richard H. Clayton III; granddaughter, Kahlen and her husband Matthew Hibbing; great-grandson, Jaxon Hale, as well as many other extended family members and lots of wonderful friends.
