Thomas A. Cardwell III, born July 25, 1943, in Oklahoma City, son of Thomas and Hilda Cardwell, passed away on January 12, 2026, in Knoxville, TN. A loving husband, father, friend, he lived a life of service, devotion, and distinction.
Dr. Cardwell earned a Bachelor of Business Administration from Texas A&M University (1965), a Master of Science from the University of Southern California (1976), a Doctor of Philosophy from Pacific Western University, Los Angeles (1988), and an honorary Doctor of Letters from the London Institute for Applied Research (1993). He served his country honorably for 28 years in the United States Air Force (1965–1993), including combat service in Vietnam with the 390th Tactical Fighter Squadron at Da Nang in 1967, flying more than 100 missions over North Vietnam. A fighter pilot and leader, he flew numerous aircraft, including the F-4, F-102, F-106, and others, and held senior command and strategic positions throughout his career.
His decorations and honorable awards included the Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, and Air Medal among others. Following military retirement, he served as a Vice President with Science Applications International Corporation.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Tom and Hilda Cardwell; his youngest brother, Timothy Cardwell; and his daughter, Jill Cardwell. He is survived by his wife, TJ Cardwell; his brother, Michael, and his wife, Linda Cardwell; his sons, Mark Cardwell, Mark Hopkins, and Kevin Hopkins; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Tom lived a life of honor and purpose. His impact will be felt for generations, and he will be deeply missed by all who know and love him. A funeral Mass will be held 1:00 p.m. Saturday, February 7, 2026 at St. Elizabeth's Episcopal Church, Father Bret Backus, Father William Simmerly and Deacon Bo Lewis officiating. Following the Mass, there will be a reception held in the Parish Hall. An Inurnment service will take at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Elizabeth's Episcopal Church Building Fund, 110 Sugarwood Drive, Knoxville, TN 37934.
