Powell

Stephen Carroll Burnett, age 62, went to be with the Lord on May 12, 2024, after a brief battle with liver cancer. Stephen was born on September 30, 1961, in Lenoir City, TN to Raymond and Frieda Burnett. He was married to his loving wife, Lisa Carico Burnett, for 32 years. He also had two children, Abigail Burnett McDonald (Daniel McDonald) and Aaron Daniel Burnett (Auburn Terry Burnett), whom he loved very deeply. He is also survived by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Roger and Norma Carico of Galax, Virginia and a sister-in-law, Tina Carico of Galax, Virginia. Stephen was a very loving husband and father who cared deeply for everyone he would encounter. He had a true love for people and a strong devotion to the Lord. Stephen accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at the age of 12 and knew by the time he was in high school that he was called into the music ministry. However, he did not pursue that call immediately because of a birth defect that caused severe hearing loss. But by the grace of God and the advancement of technology, he was able to serve the Lord in the worship ministry. His life verse was Philippians 4:13 “ I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Stephen’s true passion was leading people to worship Christ through music. His persistence and love for the Lord propelled him forward to gaining academic excellence as well. He attended college at Carson Newman College (University) and graduated with a Bachelor of Church Music and Religion in 1984. He then continued his education at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, TX where he graduated with a Masters of Music (Church Music) in 1988. He was commissioned as an Ordained Minister at First Baptist Church of Powell, TN on February 14, 1999. Stephen served the Lord in ministry through music and worship for over 40 years. He had a natural ability for leading worship and conducting services that were truly a work of art. Stephen truly strived to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives by showing them what it meant to worship by bringing all the glory to God. In 1988, Stephen began serving as full time Minister of Music at First Baptist Church Galax, VA and served there for 8 years. In 1996, he was called as Worship Pastor and Elder at First Baptist Church of Powell, TN where he led worship faithfully for 19 years. While there, he led a choir of 100 people as well as a 30 member orchestra and praise band. Beginning in January of 2016, he served at Bells Campground Baptist Church as Associate Pastor of Worship and Administration with a focus on church revitalization. Stephen’s current position was at Central Baptist Church of Oak Ridge, where he had served as the Pastor of Worship and Media Arts since 2021-2024. When Stephen was not leading worship, he enjoyed spending time with his family. He had a caring demeanor about him and deeply loved the Lord’s people and he desired to serve them in any capacity that he could. Even in the midst of sickness and pain, his love and adoration for the Lord and his family did not falter.

One of Stephen's organizations that meant so much to him was The Hearing & Speech Foundation. You may make a donation to this organization in the name of Stephen C. Burnett. The Hearing & Speech Foundation 1619 E. Broadway Avenue Maryville, TN 37804 (865)977-0981 www.hsfweb.org
