Steve Branum, age 71, of Knoxville, passed away on February 17, 2026. He was born a storyteller with a quick, dry wit. When asked if he was alright, he would reply with something like, " I'm on this side of the dirt," or " I'm gooder than snuff but not near as dusty," with his signature charm. And when making a Snapchat with a fun filter, he would always say, "When you're hot, you're hot," and smiling because he knew it to be true. He was great at telling stories from his tough upbringing, just as his brothers before him were, making them entertaining enough to have folks reeled in enough to listen until the story was finished. But, deeper down was a kind heart quick to lend a hand, generous in quiet ways, and a large lover of gossip. He wasn't glued to the phone, that's a fact. He'd disappear for stretches of time like a magician, only popping back eventually with a forced, "I'm fine," after a text threatening a welfare check. Family rolled with it because it was a part of who he was. He lived a long life, and as the years went on, his circle got smaller, with most of his lifelong friends and family gone before him. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Lillie Branum, and his brothers Bob Branum, Charlie Branum, and Jimmy Branum. The losses weighed heavily on him, and he carried that sadness every day, but he pushed through as best as he could with the hand he was dealt. He is survived by his daughter Bridget Collins and husband, Gary; son David Branum and wife, Shannon; granddaughter Candace Lyons; other grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and many dear friends who were like family to him, who will keep retelling his tales, quoting those one-liners (and Johnny jokes), and remembering a man who loved with real heart and humor.
The family extends a special thank-you to his sister-in-law, Cathy Branum, who opened her home to him in his later days, allowing him to stay closer to family.
The family will receive friends Sunday, February 22, 2026 from 2:00pm-4:00pm at Mynatt Funeral Home, Fountain City Chapel.
The world lost a great storyteller, and it's a little quieter without his lines to lighten the load. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to help with funeral expenses.
