Ruth Susan Smith, a beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and cherished friend, passed away at her home on Tuesday, January 13, 2026 at the age of seventy-eight.
Ruth was born on April 28, 1947 in Long Island, New York; she graduated with a degree in education at Cumberland College and moved to Tennessee after graduation. For forty-five years, she devoted herself to teaching, shaping generations of students with unwavering commitment to learning at Belle Morris and Halls Elementary School.
Above all else, Ruth was devoted to her family. She was a loving mother to her one child, Travis Smith, a wonderful mother-in-law to Susan, and a proud Mimi to her cherished grandchildren, Summer (Tyler) Price and Hayden (Shelby Liford) Smith, and great granddaughter, Emeri Price.
Ruth was a long-time member at Beaver Dam Baptist Church. She enjoyed time with her Sunday school class. During retirement, she took on the hobby of painting.
She was known for her giving heart, whether mentoring students, supporting family, or offering a kind word to a friend. She gave selflessly of herself.
Ruth was survived by her son, Travis (Susan) Smith, her grandchildren, Summer (Tyler) Price, Hayden (Shelby Liford) Smith, great granddaughter, Emeri Price, brother, Kenneth (Alice) Thurber, and beloved friends, Janie Branam and Bobbie Sharp who will deeply miss her. She was preceded in death by her parents, Georgette and Kenneth Thurber.
Friends may call at their convenience on Friday, January 16, 2026, from 1:00 PM -5:00 PM at Mynatt Funeral Home, Halls Chapel. Family and friends will meet on Saturday, January 17, 2026, at 10:15 AM at Mynatt Funeral Home, Halls Chapel and travel in procession to Greenwood for an 11:00 AM graveside service officiated by pastor Alan Price. Serving as pallbearers: Hayden Smith, Tyler Price, Danny Price, Todd Branam, Tanner Branam, Matt Nelson, and Chris Lay.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks the donations be made to Beaver Dam Baptist Church (4328 East Emory Road) or that her memory be honored through acts of kindness and service. An online obituary may be viewed, and condolences made at www.mynattfh.com.
