Philip Warren Butler “Phil” was reunited with his Heavenly Father on Sunday evening, October 27, 2024 at Sacred Ground Hospice House in Knoxville, TN. He was born October 7, 1944 in Corinth Mississippi to Sue and James Travis Butler. He served in the US Army and was a Vietnam Veteran.
Phil is preceded in death by his parents, Sue and James Travis Butler; brother, James Neal Butler; first wife, Bettina Bratton; stepson, Robert Bratton. He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Janis Butler; son, Jim Butler (Mia) and grandchildren Phillip and Alyssa Butler; stepson, Brian Carpenter (Wendy) and grandchildren Max and Cole Carpenter; brother, Richard Butler (Anne); sister, Becky Wood (Gary); and Aunt Betty Bumpas, Jennifer and Tom Fox, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Phil graduated from Mississippi State University in 1972 and retired from A&S Building Systems in Caryville, TN. Phil was a member and deacon of Glenwood Baptist Church, an active member of the Society of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America Chapter, and a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans.
Phil loved his family, his church, southern gospel music, and playing the harmonica. He was an avid runner and cyclist and completed the New York City Marathon in 1986. His hobbies included antiques, flea market hunting, finding a good bargain, and storytelling. His love of woodworking, combined with creativity, allowed him to craft furniture and many keepsakes for his family, including a cabin for his grandchildren in the woods behind the house. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, friend, and was loved by everyone.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Sacred Ground Hospice House or The Alzheimer's Association. The family will receive friends on Sunday, November 3, 2024 from 5:00-7:00PM at Glenwood Baptist Church with a service to follow at 7:00PM, Rev. Josh Coffelt and Rev. Travis Henderson officiating. Family and friends will meet at East Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery at 9:45AM on Monday, November 4, 2024 for a 10:00AM graveside service, with military honors provided by East Tennessee State Veterans Honor Guard.
