Norman Dale Phipps continued on his eternal journey on August 28, 2025, peacefully at his home in Rocky Top, Tennessee. He was born on April 15, 1953, in Greencastle Indiana to Homer and Estella (Cole) Phipps. During his life he resided in Indiana and Tennessee. He retired from the Putnamville Correctional Facility, achieving the title of Captain Phipps, after 32 1/2 years of service. During that time he excelled at powerlifting - winning competitions in heavy weight divisions .He married his other half and soulmate, Roxie “Janie”, on August 29, 2020. Norman enjoyed the simple things in life. He was a doting and devoted husband to Janie showing her unwavering love during their time together. Ultimately, their favorite place was just that, being together. Whether that was enjoying a good cup of coffee, exploring flea markets, listening to music, especially the Eagles and Kenny G, participating in paranormal activities, forging knives, or cruising through the mountains on his Harley. Norman had many terms of endearment in his life; son, brother, uncle, Captain Phipps, friend, dad, husband, father-in-law, but his proudest of those was being Papa Norman to his sweetheart Piper. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers James Phipps and Michael Phipps, stepson James Eastlake and the love of his life Roxie “Janie” Phipps. He is survived by his son Adam and his daughter-in-law Sunny Phipps, granddaughter Piper Phipps, sister in laws Victoria (Gary) Hood-Wells, Sandra Phipps, and Rosey Phipps. Nieces Julia (Don) Salting and Audrie Grimes. Stepdaughter-in-law Kristy Eastlake. Dear friend and colleague Terry Silvers as well and extended family members and friends. He also leaves behind three important parts of his life, his bulldogs, Tank, Smurf and Skye. The family wants to extend a special thank you to University of Tennessee Medical Center, Caryville Dialysis Clinic, Victoria Hood-Wells and Kristy Eastlake for their compassion and help in caring for Norman. Care has been entrusted to Mynatt Funeral Home. A private family service will be held on September 2, 2025. In lieu of flowers, please support your local animal shelter with a donation in honor of Norman and Janie Phipps. A celebration of life will be held in Indiana at a later date.
