Max Alvis Below “Big Bear", born November 21, 1965, in Elyria, Ohio, built his life and home in Knoxville, Tennessee. Max passed away on January 22, 2026, surrounded by family and friends.
Max was known for his rare technical mind and deep respect for doing things the right way. He took pride in honest work and carried that work ethic throughout his life, from drafting and mechanical design to owning a construction company, and later becoming an owner of a metal fabrication company, an achievement that meant a great deal to him. He had a gift for turning complex ideas into clear plans and real-world solutions.
Outside of work, baseball was his greatest passion. He played collegiate baseball and later became a coach, mentoring many on and off the field with a genuine love for the game. He was a true outdoorsman and loved fishing and hunting. He found peace and contentment out on the water or deep in the woods.
Max is survived by his wife of 41 years, Donna; his son, Austin (Kyla); and his two-year-old grandson. Max was one of eight children born to Mary and Carroll Below. He is also survived by three brothers, Randy, Gene, and Bill. He was preceded in death by his parents and by his siblings Tom, Rick, Ralph, and Kathy.
Max was deeply loved and will be missed beyond words. His strength, steady presence, and the way he showed up for the people he loved will be carried forward by all who knew him.
