Mary Elizabeth “Betty” Baird Hill, 99, of Knoxville, Tennessee, went home to be with her heavenly Father on Sunday, January 4, 2026. She was born in the Ashbury Community (now the Fork of the River Industrial Park) to Daniel and Irene Burkhart Baird. Betty Graduated from Central High School and U.T Knoxville. Upon graduation she moved to Bristol, TN and worked in the Research Department of S.E Massingill Pharmaceutical Co. In 1948 she married Dr. Hubert C. Hill and returned to Knoxville to work for Union Carbide which operated the Oak Ridge National Lab facility in Y-12. During her family’s earlier years, she occupied with taking care of a household of 9 people (5 children, 2 mothers-in-law, the parents) plus dogs, cats, and horses. Betty belonged to the P.E.O, an educational organization. She was also an active Girl Scout leader and worked in her church – St. Paul’s United Methodist. She returned to U.T in 1973 to obtain her Masters in Library Science and worked for the Knoxville school system for 12 years. She enjoyed traveling, reading, and family outings on Norris Lake. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Dr, Hubert C. Hill, and her brother, Dan E. Baird, Jr. She is survived by children, Nancy Campbell (Thomas), Laura Bell (James), Mary Beth Boring (Brad), Ellen Key (Charles), and Sara Sizemore. Grandchildren, Patrick Carnes (Melissa), Lacey King (Cory), Christopher Campbell, Courtney Boyd (Harris), Julie Sebastian (Josh), Tyler Bell, Jenna Swisshelm (David), Madison Bolden (Rick), Bailey Galloway. She was also loved by 13 Great Grandchildren. In Lieu of flowers donations can be made to St. Paul United Methodist Church.
