James Cooper Sr, age 92, of Knoxville, TN went to be with his Lord and Savior on October 13, 2025. He died peacefully in his home surrounded by his family. Leo made his way through college on basketball scholarships. He started his basketball career at the University of KY, playing for coach Ed Rupp. He then went on to play for ETSU. While at ETSU, Leo met the love of his life Joann Henson. They were married shortly after and remained devoted to each other for 68 years. Joann was a high school Art teacher in Knox County schools for 20+ years. He dedicated his life to mentoring young people as a teacher, coach and principal. He began his career as a high school educator, finishing as a principal for Gresham Middle School. He educated the youth of Knox County for 30+ years. Leo was a pilar of the community. During his career, he served Knox County as a Commissioner The majority of his service was as the chairman of the County Commission. He was also a board member of Ed South for many years. He was preceded in death by his wife, JoAnn Henson Cooper, of 68 years, his daughter, FaNee Lynn Cooper, his parents, Jasper and Hester Ann Cooper and his 9 siblings. He is survived by his daughter, Kristy Cooper Carter, his son, Leo James Cooper, Jr and wife, Laurin, his grandchildren, Casey Carter, Donnie Carter and wife Ali, Leo James Cooper, Ill (Trey) and Kirsten and Avery Cooper, his great grandchildren, Leah Carter and Briley Brumley.
There will be a Celebration of Life service Sunday, October 26, 2025, at 3:00 p.m. Mynatt Funeral Home, Fountain City Chapel, Rev. Jonathan Tharpe officiating.
