Larry G Darden

July 17, 1954 — February 23, 2024

Knoxville

Larry Guy Darden, 69, of Knoxville, TN, died peacefully after a brave battle with lung cancer on February 23, 2024, with loved ones by his side.

He was born in Knoxville in 1954 to Clifford F. Darden and Virgina M. Darden Rickett. Larry attended Central High School, before joining the US Marine Corp. After his military service, Larry worked for the USPS, retiring after 28 years of honorable service. Post-retirement, he worked for FEMA hurricane disaster relief and was dispatched to Louisiana, North Carolina, Texas, and the US Virgin Islands. Larry loved being outdoors and he spent the majority of his time fishing on the beautiful TVA lakes of East Tennessee and searching for arrowheads along the lake shores. He was a competitive bass fisherman and over the years received sponsorships from outfitters and won 24 bass fishing tournaments. After many years of fishing, Larry knew the lakes like the back of his hand and he never lost his excitement about reeling in a large bass, which he would then carefully return to the water so it could continue to thrive. He loved wildlife and saw many species during his time spent on the lakes, in the mountains, and the beach. At home, Larry enjoyed sitting on his porch and watching the owls in his yard and kept tomatoes aside for the turtles that came to visit. He was an animal lover who had numerous dogs and cats throughout his life. During a family trip to Bald Head Island, NC in Summer 2022, Larry particularly enjoyed watching a sea turtle nest hatch in the moonlight.

Larry made friends wherever he went, and everyone was “his buddy”. He loved rock music and playing the drums. In the car, it was common to see him happily drumming on the steering wheel to his favorite rock songs. He was knowledgeable about construction, enjoyed upgrading his home, and was always willing to help others with their projects. Larry loved motorcycles, hot rods, Coors light, seafood, rare steaks, westerns, and bigfoot documentaries.

Larry was preceded in death by parents Clifford F. Darden and Virgina M. Darden Rickett, stepfather Ernest Gene Rickett, and brothers Robert L. Mize and Danny C. Darden, and is survived by daughters Lindsay A Darden and Jennifer L. (Gideon Scott) Darden, brother Roger F. Darden, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and the mother of his children, Doris A. Darden.

A special thanks to those who helped take care of Larry during his illness and allowed him to stay in his home until recent weeks: Jenny Darden, Lindsay Darden, Gideon Scott, Roger Darden, Doris Darden, and special neighbor and friend Jody Gehring.

A celebration of life will be held on April 21, 2024, at Norris Dam State Park.
