Kathryn Kramer Franklin

Kathryn "Kathy" Kramer Franklin, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and educator, passed away on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, surrounded by her loving family. Born on November 4, 1955, in Mobile, Alabama, Kathy was the cherished daughter of Jeanette D. Kramer and the late Earl J. Kramer.

Kathy's life was a tapestry of love, learning, and dedication. She graduated from Grissom High School in 1973 and went on to earn a bachelor's degree in Marketing from the University of Alabama in 1977. Her thirst for knowledge and passion for education led her to further her studies, obtaining a master's degree in Business and a Doctorate in Higher Education.

On September 16, 1977, Kathy married the love of her life, Claude William "Billy" Franklin, in Huntsville, Alabama. Together, they shared nearly 49 wonderful years, building a life filled with love, laughter, and adventure. Their marriage was blessed with two daughters, Kristi Moore and Kimberly Franklin, who brought great joy to Kathy's life.

Kathy's professional journey was marked by her profound impact on the world of higher education. Over two decades, she shaped countless lives through her work at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, the University of Alabama, and East Tennessee State University, where she retired in 2009. Her commitment to mentoring and empowering students left an indelible mark on those who had the privilege of learning from her.

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Kathy was an avid seamstress whose talent for quilting and making clothes for her grandchildren was unmatched. Her creations, made with love and precision, will be treasured by her family for generations to come.

Kathy's legacy lives on through her devoted husband, Billy; her daughters, Kristi Moore (Patrick Moore) and Kimberly Franklin; her five cherished grandchildren, Kathryn Jean “Katy” Lanning, Thomas Connall Moore, Mary Margaret "Maggie" Moore, William Walter Moore, and Colt Walker Moore; her beloved mother, Jeanette D. Kramer; and her brother, Paul Anthony Kramer, along with her extended family including nieces, nephews, cousins, and many other relatives and dear friends. She is reunited in peace with her father, Earl J. Kramer.

In honor of Kathy's memory, the family suggests that donations be made to Alzheimers Tennessee, located in Knoxville, TN, to support their efforts in providing care and resources for those affected by Alzheimer’s.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at the Lantern of Morning Pointe Powell for their compassionate care and support during Kathy's final days.

A private ceremony will be held to celebrate Kathy's remarkable life. May her spirit continue to inspire and guide us, as we remember her warmth, wisdom, and unwavering love.
