In Loving Memory of Joe Tovar
With a heavy heart and deep love, we share the passing of Joe Tovar, who left this world surrounded by loved ones on a sunny afternoon on May 2, 2026, at the age of 75.
Joe was born and raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, but for the past 19 years he proudly called Knoxville, Tennessee home—a place he truly loved, where he built lasting friendships and cherished countless memories.
He was the beloved husband of Laura Tovar for 47 years, and a devoted father to his children, Sammy Tovar and Sara Palacios, who saw him not only as their dad, but as their hero. His love extended just as deeply to his son-in-law Carlos Palacios and daughter-in-law Amanda Guerin, whom he embraced as his own. Nothing brought him more joy than being “Pop Pop” to his cherished grandchildren, Adrian and Leo Palacios, who were the light of his life.
Joe was a man whose warmth could fill any room. He had a rare gift for making people feel seen, welcomed, and valued. Whether he was the life of the party or the steady hand someone needed in a difficult moment, Joe showed up—always with kindness, patience, and a genuine desire to help.
Music was one of Joe’s great loves. An incredibly gifted and accomplished acoustic guitarist, he mastered both 6- and 12-string guitars. He found joy in every genre, and nothing made him happier than playing songs by the glow of a roaring campfire, surrounded by the people he loved.
His patience was legendary, and it gave him a special talent as a softball and basketball coach. His players adored him—not just for what he taught them about the game, but for the encouragement, respect, and belief he poured into each of them.
Joe lived for sunshine and water. Summers at Norris Lake were among his happiest times, where he could often be found swimming, paddleboarding, and soaking in the beauty of the day with family and friends. In his younger years, he was a performing water skier and went on to teach countless people of all ages how to ski, sharing both his skill and his enthusiasm freely.
He also loved a good game—especially poker—and many nights were spent laughing, competing, and making memories that will never be forgotten.
Joe was a loyal fan of the Green Bay Packers and the Tennessee Volunteers, cheering them on with the same passion he brought to everything in life.
His dedication extended into his professional life as well, where he devoted an incredible 53 years to Aqua Chem—a testament to his work ethic, loyalty, and integrity.
Joe’s passing leaves a space that cannot be filled. But the love he gave, the laughter he shared, and the memories he created will live on in all who knew him. If he were here, he would want us to smile, to gather, to play music, to be out on the water—and to hold tight to the moments we have together.
The family will receive friends for visitation on Saturday, May 16, 2026, in the parlors at Mynatt Funeral Home, Powell Chapel from 2:00pm until 4:00pm.
