Johnny “John” Douglas Griffey, age 73, of Knoxville, TN went to his heavenly home on Tuesday, April 29, 2025 after a very courageous, lengthy 2 year hard fought battle with cancer. He was a much beloved father, husband, brother and cherished friend. He will be forever missed by his family.
He was a graduate from Gibbs High School, class of 1971. After high school, he worked as a dedicated employee of KUB (Knoxville Utilities Board) for 38 years, where he was known for his tireless work ethic, pride, knowledge and skill he devoted to his work.
He was an active member of Milan Missionary Baptist Church, where he enjoyed being a church greeter for several years. He enjoyed working with his hands (there was nothing he could not fix) all things automotive. He also enjoyed playing softball and coached softball at Willow Creek. He was very competitive and passed on the trait to his daughter, whom he also coached. But most of all, he loved spending time with his family.
He was married for 52 years, to his devoted wife, Marilyn and had one child, Ashlee, who he loved beyond anything. He went above and beyond to provide the best for “his girls”. He fought hard to beat the cancer so he could care “his girls”. He received his miracle; it was just a heavenly miracle. We will see him again, and what a joyess day that will be.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Betty Bates; brother, Steve Griffey; sister, Cheryl Wilson, and his in-laws, Barbara Rudder and Hubert Rudder, who he loved as his own.
He leaves behind his beloved wife, Marilyn; daughter, Ashlee Griffey, sister, Donna Holder, brothers and sisters-in-laws; Carolyn (Billy) Geames, Stanley (Vicky) Rudder, and Judy (James “Hot Shot”) White; grandpup, Hershey; several nieces and nephews, special friends, Kenny and Kim Myers, Rodney Huffman, Richard Black; and many more.
