John David Heist age 89 of Knoxville, passed away peacefully with family by his side on Friday, February 20, 2026 at Ben Atchley Tennessee State Veteran's Home. He was retired from Rohm and Haas as a pipefitter/welder, proud member of the Steelworkers Local #90, and he was affectionately know by his coworkers as "Sweet John". He served his Country honorably in the United States Navy from 1957-1962 as a Communication Specialist while aboard the U.S.S. Albemarle. John is proceeded in death by his mother; Mary Knight; wife of 67 years, Joyce Heist; daughter, Susan Heist; sister, Mary "Betsy" Hunt; and brother, Bob Heist. John will be remembered for his kindness, love of swimming in the mountain streams, and his love and dedication to his family. He was a member of Christus Victor Lutheran Church. He is survived by his son, Allen Heist (Tracy) Morristown, TN and a daughter, Amy Heist (Sonnet) Knoxville, TN. The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the entire staff at Ben Atchley Veteran's Home and Smoky Mountain Hospice for the amazing care provided. Family and friends will meet 12:45 p.m. Saturday, February 28, 2026 at Lynnhurst Cemetery for a 1:00 p.m. graveside service, Chaplain A. D. Baxter officiating with full military honors provided by the East Tennessee Veterans Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to Feral feline friends of East Tennessee (feralfelinefriends.org). Condolences may be expressed at www.mynattfh.com.
