May 11, 1950 — Jul 16, 2026

John Gorghis, age 76, passed away peacefully at his home on July 16, 2026. Born and raised in Knoxville, Tennessee, John carried his East Tennessee roots throughout his life.

As a young man, John joined the United States Navy, where he served aboard ship as a baker. He later devoted the core of his career to public service as a correctional officer with the State of Tennessee. He worked for several years at Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary and retired from Morgan County Correctional Complex.

John was preceded in death by his father, George Gorghis; his mother, Mildred Gorghis Caddell; his siblings, David Gorghis, James Gorghis, and Phillip Gorghis; and his stepson, Bill York.

John is survived by his wife, Jan Gorghis; his daughter, Kristina Lusby and her husband, Kevin; his son, John Evan Gorghis; his siblings, Elaine Simms and her husband, Bob, and Mary Gorghis, sister-in-law; and several step-children and grandchildren: Valerie Burns and her husband, Bill; Spence King and his wife, Pamela; Robin York; Jason Givens; Summer York; and Faith York, and several nieces and nephews.

John was a devoted University of Tennessee fan and loved listening to sports talk radio every morning. He also enjoyed reading a good book, often with his beloved pup, Lola, resting in his lap. He will be remembered with love by his family and all who knew him.

Family and friends will be received from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., with a service to follow, on August 9 at Mynatt Funeral Home, Fountain City Chapel.
