Joan Marie Newton Robeson, age 79, passed away on May 25, 2026.
Born in Morristown, Tennessee, Joan spent most of her life in Knoxville, where she built a life centered on faith, family, and friendship. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Thomas Robeson.
Affectionately known as “Nanny,” Joan had a gift for making everyone feel special — often reminding those she loved that they were her “favorite.” Her warmth, humor, and loving spirit left a lasting impression on all who knew her.
She is survived by her daughters who were all the “favorite” Tammy (Scott) Calloway, Gina Robeson, and Pamela (Chad) Smith, as well as her lifelong bonus daughter, Laura Biddle. She was a devoted grandmother who loved fiercely: Thomas (Bethany) Calloway, Carson Calloway (Bailey Reagan), Katie (Bayley) Lindsay, and Brooklin Smith. Great granddaughter who brought her so much joy Ella Jane Calloway. Each of them held a special place in her heart. She was loved by sisters-in-law Lorrel Newton and Betsy Andes and multiple nephews and nieces.
Joan also cherished her close friendships, especially her Bunco girls — who were known to spend more time enjoying each other’s company than actually playing Bunco — and her dear best friend, Gail Duncan.
She attended Knoxville Business College and worked at Standard Knitting Mill in her early years before dedicating herself to raising her daughters. Later, she returned to work at AccuTax, where she enjoyed helping others during tax season.
A woman of strong faith, Joan loved Jesus deeply and was a faithful member of Buffat Heights Baptist Church. She especially treasured her Sunday school class and the fellowship it brought into her life.
Joan’s life was a testament to love, kindness, and devotion to those around her. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who had the blessing of knowing her.
Family will receive friends on Saturday, May 30, 2026 at Buffat Heights Baptist Church from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. There will be a funeral service to follow with Rev Dave Thomas and Rev Mark McCoig officiating. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to BHBC Lynn Hurst Sunday School at 2800 Mill Road Knoxville, TN 37924. Condolences can be made at www.mynattfh.com
