Joan Gothard, 90, passed away on May 1, 2024. She was born on August 6, 1933, to the late Herman Theodore and Doris Mae (Hurst) Shumate.
She is survived by her daughter, Beth Galloway (husband Mike); sister and best friend, Mary Shumate West; two brothers, Fred Shumate (wife Carolyn) and Ed Shumate (wife Brenda); sister-in-law, Mona Shumate; grandchildren, Brittany Thacker (husband Clifford), Amanda Galloway (fiancé Justin Slover), and Tyler Galloway; great-grandchildren, Hunter and Ezekiel Thacker; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Joan is preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Larry, Herbert, and Frank Shumate; and a brother-in-law, Bobby West.
Joan worked over 30 years at Bell South before retiring. Since then, she has enjoyed antique shopping, and playing with all of the little kids she could, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed working in her yard and just being out in the sun. Joan especially loved cooking for her family and making sure everyone was cared for.
The family will receive friends on Monday, May 6, 2024, from 5-7 pm at Mynatt Funeral Home, Halls Chapel. A funeral service will follow with Pastors Edward Earl and Robbie West officiating, with musical selections by Richard and Linda Nicely.
Joan will be laid to rest at Greenwood Cemetery. Family and friends will meet at Mynatt Funeral Home, Halls Chapel, at 10:15 am on Tuesday, May 7, 2024, and will go in procession to the cemetery for a committal service at 11:00 am.
