Jerry Eugene Cox, age 79, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, August 23, 2026, after a courageous battle with cancer.
He was a faithful and loving husband, father, papaw, brother, and uncle. His life was marked by service, faith, music, brotherhood and love. He graduated from Karns High School and proudly served his country as a member of the United States Navy for over 27 years. Music was one of his greatest God-given talents. He was a remarkably talented musician. He could play most instruments, but the piano and accordion held special places in his story. He traveled the area for many years as part of the gospel group The New Gospel Ways. He used his talents to spread the love of Jesus to others. Those who heard him play will remember his unmistakable joy and talent he brought to the piano.
Jerry loved his family, his country, and his Lord. He especially loved spoiling his grandsons Blake, Ethan, and Corbin and his great granddaughter, Aria. He enjoyed many hobbies including hunting, fishing and woodworking. He made numerous woodcrafts for his family and friends. He was a devoted Christian of the Baptist faith which led him to become a Mason. He was honored to be a Master of his masonic lodge, C. H. McKinney Masonic Lodge #433.
Preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Mary “Kathy” Cox; father, Gene Cox; mother, Marie (Bill) Cox Weeks; mother and father-in-law, Bill and Betsy Ward; sisters-in-law, Sue Cox, Juanita Selvidge, Wanda Childress and Shirley Trott; brother-in-law, Melvin Ward; and nephews, Ronnie Ward and Edwin Myers.
He leaves behind his daughters, Gina (Chris) Middleton, Lisa Cox, Tammy (Jim) Wolfenbarger; grandsons, Blake, Ethan (Hana Kirsch), and Corbin Wolfenbarger; granddaughter, Micaelyn (Marcus) Jarvis; great granddaughter, Aria Cline; brothers, Dennis Cox and Kenneth (Jackie) Cox; sister, Judy (Frank) LeTard; brothers-in-law, Gary Childress, Jerry Trott, Ronald (Candy) Ward; sister-in-law, Dorothy (Eddie) Myers; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, at Mynatt Funeral Home, Halls Chapel from 5:00 PM-7:00 PM with a funeral service to follow. Jackson Goranflo and Jim McLean will officiate. Family and friends will meet at Greenwood Cemetery on Thursday, August 27, 2026, at 10:45 AM on an 11:00 AM internment service. Pallbearers will be Jim Wolfenbarger, Blake Wolfenbarger, Ethan Wolfenbarger, Corbin Wolfenbarger, Chris Middleton, Marcus Jarvis, Hank and Grant Goranflo.
