James Michael “Mickey” Wormsley, 85, of Knoxville passed away surrounded by his family at his home on February 25, 2026. Born on December 26, 1940 in Fleming Neon Kentucky, Mickey was the son of Harlan and Bernice Wormsley. He served in the United States Air Force. He graduated from Everett High School, attended Cumberland College then went on to graduate from the University of Tennessee. He took great pride in being able to hold the title Coach by all of his players he coached over the years in Pee Wee football. Mickey began his medical career at Baptist Hospital before joining DeRoyal Industries where he ended his career as the Vice President of International Sales. He continued his medical career at SSI and Sunoptic Technologies. In the last years of his career, he started his own consulting company, Speciality Healthcare Solutions, LLC. He was a member of St John Episcopal Church of Knoxville. On football Saturdays Mickey could be found tailgating at his favorite spot before cheering on his beloved Tennessee Volunteers. He loved going to car shows and showing off his el Camino which earned him many awards. Mickey’s greatest pride and joy was his family, especially his grandchildren. The pride in his voice when he spoke about them said everything about the kind of man he was. One of their favorites places to be together was The Shores, his home away from home. He could be found in his favorite spot, his captain’s chair, watching the sunset. Mickey is preceded in death by his parents Harlan and Bernice Wormsley, his brother, Neal and his brother-in-law, John Grant. Mickey is survived by his wife Krista Wormsley; his two children Scott (Robbyn) McPhetridge and Amanda (Josh) Gartrell and; six grandchildren Dustin McPhetridge, Hunter (Shaiyena) McPhetridge, Wyatt McPhetridge, Ava Brummerstedt, Isabel Brummerstedt, and Nolan Brummerstedt and one great grandchild Barrett McPhetridge. He is also survived by his sister Anetha Grant and niece Lillie Grant, nephew Thomas (Trish) Wormsley, niece Angela (Mark) Snyder, grand nephew Matt Snyder, grand niece Katie Snyder and sister-in-law Beverly Jo Wormsley. Brother-in-law Kevin Herbst, sister-in-law Amy (Chris) Skalet and his beloved nieces and nephews Harrison, Morgan, Chris, Frances, Hank, Ryan, Katherine, and great nephews Grady and Parker. Donations in Mickey’s memory can be made to the Empty Stocking fund. The family and friends will have a celebration of life at a future date.
