George Pelham Shiflett

October 2, 1925 — June 9, 2026

Dr. George Pelham Shiflett, 100, was born on October 2, 1925, and departed this life for heaven on June 9, 2026. George was born in a log cabin on the family farm in Hawkins County, Tennessee, to Pelham Manning Shiflett and Cornelia Campbell Shiflett. He was a lifelong Tennessean, although he spent his early years throughout the deep south where his father was a road builder. He spent his summers on the farm with his maternal grandparents Cornelia Maxwell and George Henry, and that is where he began his lifelong love of animal husbandry. Upon graduation from high school, George joined the United States Navy, was assigned to Midshipman's school and became Captain of a PT boat in the Philippines. He became one of the last proud veterans to serve his country during World War II.

George graduated from the University of Tennessee and Auburn University of Veterinary Medicine. He was a practicing Veterinarian in Knoxville for 50 years. He was an enthusiastic Tennessee sports fan and outdoorsman. He lived an active and joyful life with his loving and devoted wife Julia, and together they spent many years in the Florida Keys lobster diving and fishing with family and friends. They particularly enjoyed traveling the world on extended cruises. He is remembered by his family and friends as a generous and considerate Christian man.

He is survived by his wife Julia Bradley Shiflett; daughters Connie Shiflett Wallace (John), Lisbeth Shiflett Wolfe (Budde); sons David Shiflett (Judy), and Dean Shiflett (Kathy), grandchildren Taylor Wallace, Rob Wallace, Helen Shiflett Dowty, Henry Shiflett, Bradley Shiflett, Alice Shiflett; eight great grandchildren and special cousins Patsy and Chug. In lieu of flowers, friends are requested to make contributions to: Young Williams Animal Center, 6400 Kingston Pike, Knoxville, TN., 37919, or Humane Society of The Tennessee Valley, 6717 Kingston Pike, Knoxville, TN 37919.
