Fred Shumate

Fred Shumate, born May 16, 1938, passed away on Tuesday, December 10, 2024. He was a member of Union Baptist Church. Fred was a custom home builder for over 40 years, then worked at remodeling until he was forced to retire because of ill health. Preceded in death by wife Betty Shumate, parents Herman and Doris Shumate, siblings Frank (Ruby), Joan Gothard, Herbert and Larry; brother-in-law, Bobby West. Survived by wife of 51 years, Carolyn Shumate; daughters, Jeannie VanDeGriff  (Joel), Freda Cochran (Ron), Melissa Towner (Nick); sister, Mary West; brother, Ed (Brenda); 11 grandchildren, Drew (Holly) VanDeGriff, Tanner (Alexis) VanDeGriff, Brody (Bethany) VanDeGriff, Joy (David) Crawford, Summer Bateson, Cidney Baskerville, Lauren Cochran, Torri Turner, Madison (Miguel) Garcia, Cole (Amber) Towner, Taylor (Tucker) Burkhalter; and 8 great-grandchildren, Abe and Hugh VanDeGriff, Lauren Deal, Willow and Lily VanDeGriff, Landen Sutton, Skylee Bateson, Jackson Baskerville, and arriving soon, James Luke Towner; sister-in-law, Mona Shumate.

There will be a Call of Convenience on Saturday, December 14, 2024, from 9:30 AM to 1:30 PM at Mynatt Funeral Home Halls Chapel. Family and friends will meet at 1:45 PM, at Union Baptist Church Cemetery on Maynardville Highway for a 2:00 PM graveside service, officiated by Reverand Gary Vandergriff.
