Dorothy Jean Brummett, “Mamaw,” born November 21, 1940, went home to be with the Lord on September 11, 2024, surrounded by the love of her family as they held her hands and kissed her goodbye. She was 83 years old .Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Agnes Broyles; her beloved husband, David Brummett; her daughters Penny Spradlin, Lisa Tipton, Sherry Presley, and Shelley Tipton; her granddaughter Whitney Beck; and her grandson Marty Swicegood. Known affectionately as "Mamaw" by all who knew her, Dorothy had a heart full of compassion, especially for animals. She raised many rescue animals throughout her life, often bottle-feeding raccoons, opossums, and squirrels, and lovingly caring for countless dogs and cats. Dorothy’s nurturing spirit extended far beyond her family; she was truly a mother to all, human and animal alike. Dorothy also had a remarkable talent for sewing, which she poured her heart into for countless hours. While she was best known for her handmade teddy bears, she also lovingly crafted frogs, elephants, lions, and more of her own design. Every piece she created was given away as a gift because she believed that everyone deserved something or someone to hug and love. Sewing was her labor of love, done solely to put a smile on someone’s face and bring them joy. For Dorothy, seeing the happiness her creations brought to others was one of her greatest rewards, always giving something of herself to brighten the lives of others. In addition to her creativity with sewing, Dorothy had a gift for taking things others saw as trash and giving them new life and purpose. From restoring discarded baby dolls to crafting piggy banks from used cleaner jugs, she found beauty and potential in the simplest things. Her ability to transform what others would throw away into something meaningful and special was yet another reflection of her generous and resourceful spirit. Dorothy also enjoyed simple pleasures, like hunting for four-leaf clovers, collecting "pretty rocks," and rummaging at yard sales for hidden treasures. She loved being around people and had a passion for dancing, which brought her great joy. Dorothy was especially proud of the seven years she spent living in Japan, a cherished time in her life that she often spoke about. Mamaw leaves behind a loving family, including her two grandsons, Billy and Loren, her “boys,” as she always called them, who are heartbroken and will miss her terribly; four daughters, Tiffy, Suzie, Paula, and Shelley; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren, along with many wonderful friends and neighbors. Mamaw’s love, compassion, creativity, and beautiful laughter will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Words cannot express the profound sadness we feel at her passing. The world feels much lonelier without her, and I’d give anything for just one more hug. The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Saturday, September 14, 2024 at Mynatt Funeral Home, Fountain City Chapel followed by a 7:00 p.m. funeral service, Rev. Zach Sexton officiating. Family and friends will meet 10:45 a.m. Sunday, September 15, 2024 at Greenwood Cemetery for an 11:00 a.m. graveside service, Rev. Buran Phillips officiating.
