David G. Byrd, age 83, of Powell, passed away on October 2, 2026 surrounded by his family. He was born November 8, 1942 in LaFollette, Tennessee.
Affectionately known as "Granddaddy," David was a devoted Christian and a faithful member of First Baptist Church Powell for more than 60 years. His faith was an important part of his life, and throughout the years he served his church in many capacities, including as a deacon, Sunday School teacher, and Royal Ambassador leader.
David was a devoted Mason for more than 62 years. He was raised to the degree of Master Mason in 1964 at Caryville Masonic Lodge #665 F&AM. Following the merger of the Caryville and LaFollette lodges, he became a member of Campbell County Masonic Lodge #778 F&AM, where he continued his lifelong commitment to the fraternity. He also became a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason, proudly maintaining his membership in the Scottish Rite for more than 62 years.
David attended Cumberland College before beginning a long and successful career in the coal industry. He worked in the industry for more than 40 years and retired as President of Garland Coal Company. David was a truly honest and ethical businessman who believed in treating people fairly and doing what was right. He earned the trust and respect of those he worked with throughout his career and took great pride in conducting business with integrity.
David was an avid Tennessee Vols fan and loved watching sports. He and his family enjoyed holding season tickets for many years and cheering on the Vols together. As much as he loved Tennessee sports, nothing brought him greater joy than his family. David was a humble and generous man who loved his family deeply and treasured the time he spent with them.
David was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Bernice Byrd; brother, Lamar Byrd; sister, Aurelia Brown; and infant sister, Vivian Byrd.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Linda Byrd; sons, David “Garland” Byrd II (Jami) and Gregory Lamar Byrd (Wendy); grandchildren, Lindsey Rose (Aaron), Macy Byrd, Matthew Byrd (Jordyn), Ashley Byrd, Whitney Baxter (Jason), and Loren Gaylor (Derek); great-granddaughters, Jaycee Byrd, Clara Rose, and Brooklyn Baxter; and great-grandsons, Reed and John Gaylor. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
Matthew Byrd, Jason Baxter, Derek Gaylor, Keith Clotfelter, Curtis Gwin, and Wayne Stooksbury will serve as pallbearers. Russell Byrd and Marty Byrd will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Flowers are appreciated, or memorial donations may be made in David’s memory to First Baptist Church Powell, 7706 Ewing Road, Powell, TN 37849, designated for the Building Fund; or to Mission of Hope, P.O. Box 51824, Knoxville, TN.
David will be remembered for his steadfast faith, humble and generous spirit, dedication to his church, strong work ethic, and love for his family. His life was one of faith, service, and devotion, and the legacy he leaves behind will continue through the many lives he touched.
The Family will receive friends Tuesday, October 6, 2026 from 5-7pm with the funeral service to follow at 7pm at Mynatt Funeral Home Powell Chapel, 2200 Powell Dr. Powell, TN 37849. Pastor Tim McGhee and Dr. Perry Garrett will officiate. Family and friends will meet at Woodlawn Cemetery in LaFollette, TN Wednesday, October 7, 2026 at 11am for the graveside service.
