Chris Mitchell, age 43, Knoxville, Tennessee passed away on September 1, 2026.
Chris was born in Oak Ridge to Charlie and Pat Mitchell and raised in Rockwood, Tennessee and enjoyed an active childhood of baseball, basketball and all the other adventures East Tennessee boys cut their teeth on. He was employed by Clayton Homes. He will be sorely missed by his family and those who knew him. He had a lively sense of humor and never heard a “Dad” joke he didn’t like to tell. He will be remembered for his caring manner and the way he loved everyone.
Chris was a devoted husband and father putting his family above himself. His wife, Bobbie Jo, was the love of his life. He relished his relationship with his son, Silas, and thoroughly enjoyed their times together whether pitching a baseball or helping him with a school math assignment. Chris loved baseball but Bobbie Jo and Silas made him the happiest. Although his life was cut much too short, he has left his family with an indelible image of a loving, compassionate and giving husband and father.
In recent years, Chris was all-in on youth baseball. He was the head coach of his son’s travel team—Base Knox Royals 8U. He prided himself in “getting down on their level” when the boys needed extra instruction. But he was most proud of building character in them, having said many times “I’m developing good humans who happen to be good at baseball.” At every game Chris made sure the whole team prayed together. Chris was happiest when he was with his “baseball family.”
Chris was preceded in death by his grandparents James and Hattie Swicegood, Allen and Ruth (Nanny) Mitchell and father-in-law Tom Brooks. He is survived by his wife Bobbie Jo Mitchell and son Silas Mitchell, parents Charlie and Pat Mitchell, mother-in- law Tammy Brooks, aunts Sarah Chattin and Shirley Ruppe and close cousin Justin Mitchell and other cousins, aunts and uncles. Chris’ family extended to many friends outside his immediate family and they feel the full weight of their tragic loss of him.
Arrangements are being handled by Mynatt Funeral Home. The family will receive friends between 10 AM and 12 PM on September 12 followed by a remembrance service at Mynatt Funeral Home at 2000 Powel Drive, Knoxville.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Operation Inasmuch (P. O. Box 2523, Knoxville, TN 37901, www.operationinasmuch.org), a ministry loved and supported by Chris and Bobbie Jo Mitchell.
