Charles “Charlie” Mac Armstrong, age 90 and Sandra “Sandy” Kathleen Armstrong, age 84, both of Powell, Tennessee, passed away three hours apart on the evening of Monday, February 9, 2026, at Ben Atchley Tennessee State Veterans’ Home. Charlie and Sandy have been members of First Baptist church of Powell since 2004.
In November of 1935, Charlie was found on the doorstep of a doctor’s office in Charlston, Tennessee. Charlie was adopted by Carl and Cora Armstrong of Lake city, Tennessee. When he was nine years old, Cora died suddenly and Charlie was left to be raised by his father Carl and many aunts and uncles and the good people of Main Street Baptist Church, Lake City, TN. While in elementary and high school, Charlie devoted much of his energy to sports. In 1954, Charlie was granted a football scholarship with East Tennessee State University. He earned a degree in Business Administration and Economics. Following college, he worked for the Tennessee Banking Department and became Chief Bank Examiner in East Tennessee District. He later became the first President of C & C Bank in Knox County, TN. He then moved on to become the President of the Andrew Johnson Bank in Greeneville and Alcoa Bank in Alcoa, TN. In 2004, Charlie retired from the U.S. Small Business Administration. Charlie served his country in the United States Army, spending most of his tenure in Germany. He was a founding member of the Claxton Optimist Club where he made many great friends and coached football and basketball. Charlie was a former member of Zion Baptist Church, Claxton, TN.
Sandy was born October 4, 1941, in Knoxville Tennessee to Kathleen Miller and Charles Wilson Jr. Sandy was known for her deep heart and passion for people, and her whimsical personality. Sandy found the love of her life, Charlie Armstrong, and they married on February 7, 1984, passing just a mere few days after their 42nd anniversary.
Sandy was the beloved spouse of Charlie Armstrong, and sister of Charles Wilson III, and Beth Greene. She was a mother figure as well to Charlie’s children, Michael Armstrong (Aimee), and Yvonne Armstrong Ballard, Tommy and Summer Armstrong. Sandy always had a huge heart for children and happily become “Mimi” to Thomas Ballard, McKenzie Ballard Purcell, Rachel Armstrong. She was aunt to Michael Wilson (Leslie), Jacob Greene (Chelsea), and Joshua Greene (deceased), and great aunt to Blakely and Hudson Greene. There were many children from the Baptist Center North where she used to go to share her love and heart as well.
Sandy was preceded in death by her parents, husband her nephew, Joshua Greene, and her son, Christopher Brown. Sandy is preceded in death by her son, Chris Brown.
The family will receive friends from 2:00-4:00 PM on Sunday, February 15, 2026, at Mynatt Funeral Home, Halls Chapel, with funeral service to follow at 4:00 PM with Pastor Tim McGhee officiating. Family and friends will meet at 9:45 AM Thursday, February 19, 2026, at East Tennessee State Veterans’ Cemetery (Governor John Sevier Highway) for a 10:00 AM graveside service. Full military honors will be presented by Tri County Veterans’ Honor Guard. Mynatt Funeral Home, Halls Chapel, is honored to service the family of Charlie and Sandra Armstrong. In lieu of flowers, the family ask that donations be made in Mr. & Mrs. Armstrong’s honor to First Baptist Church of Powell 7706 Ewing Rd. Powell, TN 37849.
