Barry Thomas Smith

Barry Thomas Smith, age 78, of Powell, TN, passed away on Sunday, January 18, 2026 at Ben Atchley State Veterans Home. 

Barry had the biggest heart. He loved to hunt, fish and camp. He enjoyed motorcycles and rode all of his life. He was a veteran of the United States Army and was last stationed at the Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage, Alaska before being honorably discharged. Barry was a welder by trade and worked on the oil rigs in Alaska.

Preceded in death by his parents, Tom and Alma Smith; daughter, Missy Smith; brother, Richard Smith; sister, Carol Sharpe.

Barry is survived by his sisters, Karen Hellmund and Kathy Minor; brother, John Smith; special friend, Becky Dodson; special nephews, Chris Sharpe and Bodean Stewart and a host of nieces and nephews; stepson, Sean Rogers.

The family would like to express a special thank you to the staff at Ben Atchley State Veterans Home, Smoky Mountain Hospice, special friends, Craig Copeland and Dennis Coward. Also, to Barbara Oliver for taking care of Barry's cat and house sitting during his stay at Ben Atchley State Veteran's Home.

In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for donations to be made in the name of Barry Smith, to the Ben Atchley Tennessee State Veterans Home Activities Department at www.tsvh.org/donate. 

The family will receive friends from 5:00pm - 7:00pm on Wednesday, February 4, 2026 at Mynatt Funeral Home, Powell Chapel with a celebration of life to take place at 7:00pm. The family will meet at East Tennessee Veterans Cemetery on John Sevier Highway at 1:45pm on Thursday, February 5, 2026 for a 2:00pm graveside service with full military honors to be presented by the East Tennessee Honor Guard.
