Alonzo Lonnie Gregg

Alonzo "Lonnie" Gregg, born on October 6, 1949, left for his heavenly home on September 4, 2025. Lonnie attended Rule High School, where he was a star athlete in football and boxing. He continued his boxing career by becoming the East Tennessee Golden Gloves Champion in 1966-1971. After graduation, he joined the Navy as an aviation hydraulics mechanic and plane captain. He served on the USS Enterprise. While in the Navy, He earned a black belt in taekwondo and isshin ryu. He was selected for the US Olympic trials for boxing, but was unable to participate due to being diagnosed with Sarcoidosis. After his diagnosis, he spent time at Oakland Navy Hospital in California. That is where he developed his love of motorcycles. He returned home and married Kathy Thacker, and had his first two children. He later married the love of his life, Leda Gregg and had two more children. In 1994, he became medically retired and that's when his prison ministry began. He went on to visit hundreds of prisons and minister to many thousands of inmates. His ministry lasted 30 years, until he was no longer able. He participated in almost 300 Bill glass Weekend of Champions prison events as a coordinator and chaplain. He was a volunteer chaplain at Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary and Morgan County Correctional Complex. He was instrumental in leading thousands of inmates to faith in Christ Jesus. He spent the last years of his life enjoying his numerous family members and friends. He was always front and center in all get togethers and celebrations. Preceded in death by his parents, Geneva Mae and William Anderson Gregg; brother, Ronnie Walter Gregg; sisters, Alaina Simone Cantrell and Barbara Kay Freeland; niece, Autumn Brandi Strader. Survivors; wife, Lynedia (Leda) Gregg; children, Jeremy (Jennifer) Gregg, Jennifer (Michael) Hicks, Jessica (Michael) Brady, Jackie Gregg and Danny (Vanessa) Rowlett; grandkids, Ryan (Rachel) Zach, Kenzie (Bailey), Sydney, Peyton, Alex, Zoe, Ty, Charlie, Addyson, Adam, Jordan, Danny, Jr., and Danielle; great-granddaughter, Iris; sisters, Sheila Diane (T.W.) Cook and Carol “Nonah” Crookshank; brother, Roger Anderson (Kim) Gregg; sisters-in-laws, Brenda Joyce (Ken James) Patterson and Barbara Linda (Randy) Meyer; brother-in-law, Robert Lee Shuler II; many nieces, nephews and family friends. There will be a Celebration of Life Service 2:00 p.m. Saturday, September 13, 2025 at Trinity Community Church 6706 Central Avenue Pike Knoxville, TN 37912 Rev. Neil Silverberg and Rev. Tyler Lynde officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family ask that memorials be made to Prison Ministry Program at Trinity Community Church or Lock Down on the Outside 2818 Selma Ave Knoxville, TN 37914.
